A few weeks ago I had dinner at Aubaine in Selfridges with my friend, Chinwe. I had heard a lot about the place through various bloggers so I was very keen to try it out. We went on a Friday evening so it was pretty busy with after work diners and tourists.
Aubaine offers a menu with a taste of modern France with a nod to the traditional. The decor of the restaurant in Selfridges was very pretty with plants decked around and some hanging lavenders on the walls. It also had a very cozy feel to it and most important of all it was clean.
We were seated very quickly and we were positioned next to the window so we had a good view of Oxford Street and its surroundings. I must admit the service was a bit slow and we had to wait a while before a waiter came over to take our order.
We kicked off with some drinks; I had a glass of Shiraz and Chinwe had a cocktail. I didn’t order a starter because I did not think I could fit it in so I went straight for the main course. The menu looked amazing with so many mouthwatering dishes and it took me a while to decide what to have.
I ordered the Roast Chicken which came with lemon & rosemary corn fed chicken breast, green olive & Parmesan polenta, broad beans, asparagus, baby watercress and jus. It sounded like a lot of food so I was certain it would fill me up.
When it arrived the portions were tiny – now I am not the biggest eater but I demolished that in ten minutes and I was still hungry. I decided I needed some carbs to fill the gap so I ordered a portion of Mashed Potato which was very filling. In fact I was so full that I changed my mind on having dessert.
What I will say is that the food was amazing, very well cooked and tasty. It was absolutely delicious and I can see why people have raved about the place. The cost of the main dish was £16.00 and the mashed potato was £3.50 which brings it up to a whooping £19.00. A bargain considering the venue and the quality of food that you are getting.
The only thing I would point out is that you should certainly order a side dish because the main dishes are very small as in they look like side dishes. However, the side dishes are quite large and will fill you up.
I think overall that Aubaine is a great restaurant but need to exercise more transparency with the products they serve. For example when asking for water – if you do want water from the tap then you need to specify that because you will be served water in the bottles and charged for it. This happened to us and we were not happy. In fact we were so annoyed we refused to pay the service charge but we felt pressurised to do so by the waiter. Not a good feeling and the evening was left very bittersweet.
